Is Office Protect a second layer of protection on top of Office 365's own security?

By applying best practices or your own custom configuration, Office Protect helps you to easily manage and take advantage of the best security features from Office 365.

However, that is not to say that Office Protect does not offer added value. By simplifying and offering a layer of intelligence in the form of the interpretation of events, Office Protect enhances your ability to react to alerts as they are reported to you.

For example, Office 365 sends event notifications when an account signs in from an unfamiliar IP address. Office protect compares the location of the IP in the event your list of approved countries in the Sign-In from Unauthorized Country setting of the Monitor section. The resulting event message is then reported to you as ‘an account signed in from an unauthorized country’.
